Application Guide

Overview

Box Drive is the desktop app that mounts Box content as a drive on Windows or macOS so you can open Box files like normal files.

Most Box Drive tickets are signing into the wrong Box account, sync still in progress, or external link permissions.

Plain English

What this app is usually used for

Box desktop sync client that exposes Box folders as a drive letter on Windows or a Finder location on macOS without downloading every file.

It is part of the Box family covered in our app help.

Common problems

Common problems

A folder is missing in Box Drive

You can see a folder at app.box.com in the browser, but it does not appear in Box Drive.

Likely fix

Wait for Box Drive's sync to finish, confirm the same account is signed into both, and pin the folder in Box Drive if you need it offline.

What to collect

Send the folder name, the Box account in Box Drive, and a screenshot of the same folder in the browser.

An external share link won't open

You sent or received a Box shared link that will not open for the recipient.

Likely fix

Check the link's permission setting (people in your company, people with the link, specific people) and any expiration date.

What to collect

Send the share link URL, the link permission, the expiration date, and the recipient's account.

Box Drive is signed into the wrong account

Box Drive shows a personal Box or the wrong company.

Likely fix

Sign out of Box Drive, quit it fully, and sign back in with your work Box account through company sign-in.

What to collect

Send the account email shown and the company sign-in method your firm uses.

First things to try

First things to try

Quick checks before you change anything

  • Are you signed into Box Drive with the work Box account or a personal Box?
  • Is the failure sign-in, a missing folder, an external share link, or a file that won't open?
  • Does the same folder appear correctly at https://app.box.com in the browser?
  • Did the issue start after a organization company sign-in change, role change, or new computer?

Try these fixes first

  • Compare what you see in Box Drive with what you see in the browser at https://app.box.com.
  • Confirm the Box account shown in Box Drive matches the browser.
  • For external share issues, check the link's permission setting before assuming the link is broken.

Slow down

Do not do this yet / warnings

Avoid these until support says it is safe

  • Mark any offline or pending files as uploaded, sign out of Box Drive, and uninstall through the standard uninstaller before reclaiming the computer.

What support needs

What details support needs

Send these details

  • A screenshot of Box Drive showing the missing folder or sign-in screen.
  • The Box account email shown in Box Drive.
  • The folder name and where it should appear.
  • For external share issues, the share link URL and its permission setting.

Licensing & access

Licensing / access notes

Licensing / access checks

  • Box Drive access depends on your work Box account being set up by IT — personal Box accounts will not see company content.
  • External share links can be set so only people in your company can open them, or only specific people, or anyone with the link.
  • If a folder is shared but you cannot see it, you may not have been added to the folder by the owner.

More checks

More setup checks

Install / update basics

  • Install Box Drive from the company-approved Box install path or the Box downloads page.
  • Sign in with your work Box account, typically via company sign-in from your firm's company sign-in page.
  • Wait for the initial sync to finish before assuming files are missing.

More things to check

  • Confirm the Box account shown in Box Drive matches what https://app.box.com shows for the user.
  • Check that Box Drive's drive letter or mount is present before assuming files are missing.
  • If the network is blocking Box, confirm the company's Box service is reachable from the computer.
